Artist Statement.
As a multimedia artist, my work primarily centers around watercolor and graphite, with photography, charcoal, and collage sometimes weaving their way into my creations. Having spent years creating art solely with my toddler’s tools, I refocused my practice on my own creative expression when hospitalized mid-way through my second pregnancy. My primary focus on watercolor allows me to work with intention and patience, meticulously capturing the intricate details of my life's experiences on paper as it demands that I relinquish control, transforming the artistic process into a dynamic dance between past and present, desire and reality. This interplay not only shapes my art but also enables me to process and heal, finding solace and understanding through creation. I find deep connection with this parallel, enabling me to process and heal from trauma with every brushstroke. Through my work, I hope to create visual narratives that highlight the complex dualities that I experience as a mother, chronically ill person, social rights activist, and trauma steward and survivor.
Bio.
Morgan L. Silk is an artist from central New Jersey who somehow finds time in each day to parent her two boys lovingly and enthusiastically, provide support in facilitation, curriculum, and marketing for a education-based nonprofit organization, and paint, draw, and photograph the young people who inspire her. On any given day, you’ll find her dancing in the mud with her kiddos, riding her horse through the woods, working on an art piece, or typing unnecessarily fast and loud on the keyboard.
